The municipality ( municipio ) Ensenada is the geographically largest municipio in Baja California and Mexico. The municipality comprises the bulk of the northern half of the Baja California peninsula plus some islands such as the Isla de Cedros and Guadalupe. It is bordered to the north by the Municipalities Playas de Rosarito, Tijuana, Tecate and Mexicali, on the east by the Gulf of California, on the south by Baja California Sur, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean.

The municipality has about 466,000 inhabitants ( as of 2010), of which 280,000 live in the main town ( cabecera ) Ensenada. More cities with more than 10,000 inhabitants are Rodolfo Sánchez Taboada ( Maneadero ), Lazaro Cardenas and Vicente Guerrero.
