Enzyme Commission number
The EC numbers ( Enzyme Commission numbers engl. ) form a numerical classification scheme for enzymes. Each EC number consists of four numbers separated by dots. Strictly speaking, not the enzyme itself, but the reaction it catalyzes, categorized. So it may happen that unrelated enzymes that catalyze the same reaction get the same EC number assigned.
Phosphotransferases ( kinases included )
Format of the classification
The classification is progressively getting more specific from left to right. Thus, the EC number of the enzyme tripeptide aminopeptidase sets ( EC 3.4.11.4 ) as follows:
- EC 3 - - -: .. Hydrolase
- EC 3.4 - -: .. Peptidase ( hydrolysis of a peptide bond )
- EC 3.4.11 -: . Aminopeptidase
- EC 3.4.11.4: tripeptide aminopeptidase ( catalyzes the cleavage of an amino-terminal amino acid of a tripeptide )
