Eppenberg- Wöschnau is a municipality in the district of Olten in the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland.

Geography

Eppenberg- Wöschnau is 2 km southwest of the city of Aarau (air line). Wöschnau extends to 379 m above sea level. M. on the southern edge of the Aare valley on the gravel terrace at the foot of Buechholzes while Eppenberg on a gently sloping hillside to the east to 459 m above sea level. M. in a clearing island situated on the hills between the Aare Valley and the Suhrental.

The area of ​​1.9 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Swiss plateau at the eastern extremity of the canton of Solothurn. The northern boundary runs along the former Aarelaufs while the main proportion of water is directed to the north via a side channel to a hydroelectric power plant. From the Aare, the communal land extends southward over the Talniederung ( Schachen ) and on the adjacent hills of the Buechholzes which drops sharply with a rock edge and a steep slope to the Aare valley toward. The double municipality consists of the villages Eppenberg and Wöschnau and a commercial settlement in Schachen. Neighboring communities of Eppenberg- Wöschnau are Schönenwerd and Obererlinsbach in the canton of Solothurn and Aarau and Unterentfelden in Canton Aargau.

Population

With 316 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Eppenberg- Wöschnau one of the small communities of the Canton of Solothurn. Of the residents 81.0% are German, 4.8 % speak Serbo-Croatian and 4.2 % Italian ( as of 2000). The population of Eppenberg- Wöschnau amounted in 1850 to 183 residents in 1900 to 266 inhabitants. During the 20th century, the population rose to 1970 on 439 people. Since then, a significantly decreasing trend was recorded again, with the decrease in population occurred mainly at the back Wöschnau.

Economy

Eppenberg- Wöschnau was until well into the 20th century a predominantly shaped by the agriculture community. Today, the crop and livestock farming have only a minor role in the occupational structure of the population. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. In the Aare valley at Wöschnau to companies in the construction industry and a carpenter have settled. A part of the Aarau hippodrome in Schachen also lies within the municipality. History

The territory of Eppenberg- Wöschnau was settled very early. On the Buechholz, the steeply on three sides and was of course protected, was located during the La Tène period one of the largest Celtic refuges in Europe. It covered an area of ​​approximately 12 hectares and was protected from the south by a system of ramparts and a moat. Since only very few remains have been found in the area, the refuge was probably used only during a short time.

The first mention of Eppenberg was in 1294 already under the present name. The name goes back to the Old High German personal name Eppo and thus means mountain of Eppo. Wöschnau 1294 also first appeared in the records under the name Weschnowe, which is interpreted as a case of washing ( bespülten or flooded ) Au.

In the Middle Ages Eppenberg and Wöschnau were part of Werder Office in Buchsgau, who was under the suzerainty of the Count of Frohnburg. The lower jurisdiction over the villages held the pen Schönenwerd. Later were the two places to the rule Gösgen, which was in 1458 purchased from Solothurn. Eppenberg and Wöschnau were henceforth the Bailiwick Gösgen and the district court Schönenwerd allocated. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798 ) Eppenberg and Wöschnau belonged during the Helvetic Republic to the administrative district of Solothurn and from 1803 to the district of Olten. Since that time, they form a separate double municipality. The municipality does not have its own church; it belongs to the parish Schönenwerd.
