Eric Van Rompuy

Eric Karel Paul Van Rompuy ( born November 23, 1949 in Uccle / Ukkel ) is a Belgian politician of the party Christian - Democratisch en Vlaams (CD & V). Since June 1999 he has been a deputy in the Flemish Parliament.

Life

Eric Van Rompuy came on 23 November 1949 as the son of Victor Van Rompuy to the world. He is the brother of former Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy and communist politician Tine Van Rompuy.

Van Rompuy visited until 1967 the Sint -Jan Berchmans College in Brussels and graduated in 1971 his studies in philosophy at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven with the bachelor's degree. In 1975 he received his doctorate from the same university in the field of business administration. From 1976 to 1981 he worked as an economist at the Kredietbank (now part of KBC Group) entered.

His political career began Van Rompuy in 1977 as chairman of the youth organization of the Christelijke Volkspartij (CVP ) (since 2001 CD & V), and held this post until 1983. 1981 Van Rompuy was a member of the European Parliament, but not re-elected in the 1984 European elections. Then he sat from 1985 to 1995 for the CVP in the Belgian Chamber of Representatives, and also served from 1991 to 1995 as leader of the CVP in the Flemish Parliament. In 1995 he was appointed to the Flemish Minister for Economy, small and medium enterprises, agriculture and media and has held this post until 1999. Subsequently, he was until 2004 Leader of the CVP / CD & V in the Flemish Parliament.

Van Rompuy is also at the local level since 1982 in the City Council of Zaventem politically active. Since 2007 he has held the office of there Schöffens of Finance, Planning and the City Planning.

For his merits Van Rompuy was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of Leopold in 1999. He is married and has one daughter.
