Erzurum Vilayet

The Vilayet of Erzerum ( Ottoman ولايت ارضروم, IA Vilayet -i Erzurum, Armenian Էրզումի վիլայեթ ) was a province ( vilayet ) of the Ottoman Empire. It was one of the six Armenian vilayets in eastern Anatolia, and had before the First World War, a large number of Armenians living there.

The Vilayet of Erzerum bordered to the east and north-east to both the Persian Empire as well as to the Russian Empire, to the north by the Vilayet of Trebizond, on the west by the Vilayet of Sebastia and on the south by the vilayet of Bitlis, Mamuret -ul Aziz, and Van. After the Russian Turkish War in 1877/1878 the Kars region was ceded to the Russian Empire, which she managed until 1917 as Kars Oblast.
