Reception

From Allmusic the album received an excellent review, the author awarded four and a half out of five stars and described the work as groundbreaking ( " groundbreaking " ) and singing as passionately ( "passionate ").

In 1988, the album by the readers of Kerrang magazine was chosen of all time the best arena rock album. In the same magazine Escape landed in 1989 on the 32th rank in the list of the best heavy metal albums of all time in a survey of the Virgin Group, the album debuted at number 24 of the best alternative rock or heavy metal albums of all time. From Classic Rock magazine it was in the list of the best rock albums of all time at number 22 mention.

In the U.S., the album has reached nine times platinum status and was thus sold at least nine million times.
