Essendon Football Club

The Essendon Football Club, also known as Essendon Bombers, is an Australian football club based in Essendon, a suburb of Melbourne, the (then Victorian Football League) plays since 1897 in the Australian Football League. With 16 titles, the Bombers are in addition to the Carlton Blues the most successful team of the Australian professional league. The club colors are red and white, the venues are Etihad Stadium and Melbourne Cricket Ground. Prior to 1921 played Essendon at the East Melbourne Cricket Ground, and to 1991 in the Windy Hill in Essendon. The latter is still used as a training venue of the club.

History

The Essendon Footbal Club was founded in 1871-1873 and was one of the clubs in the premiere season of the VFL in 1897, in which they could win right away the championship. More titles followed in 1901, 1911 and 1912. 1921 attracted the bomber of the East Melbourne Cricket Ground in Windy Hill, where they fought out their home games until 1991. Two years after the move was 1923, the next championship win be celebrated. A year later, the title was successfully defended. It was followed by two more appearances in the finals rather a long dry spell with 13 missed finals and a Wooden Spoon as the worst team began, from which Essendon in 1940 was able to free with a final participation. 1942 won the Bombers the championship again, after they had already failed in 1941 at the Grand Final. In 1943 they were also in the final for the title, but lost there against Richmond.

Between 1946 and 1951, the Bombers managed six times in a row, the entry into the Grand Final, where they have won three titles. This was followed by changeable services over the next few years before 1962, the new title succeeded, which was repeated in 1965. Then came Essendon in a new crisis, as 1967-1980 only three times the finals were reached, but no title has been won. 1984 and 1985 eventually get re- title wins.

In the first year of the AFL 1990 Essendon reached the Grand Final, which was lost. Finally, in 1993 succeeded the first win of the new AFL, which was repeated in 2000. Since 2000, however, the Bombers are without titles and reached the finals only twice since 2005.
