Etziken

Etziken is a municipality in the district water office of the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland.

Geography

Etziken is located on 479 m above sea level. M., 9 km east of the main town Canton of Solothurn (air line). The former street village is located on a slightly inclined to the northwest slope between the gravel plain of the west and the Emme Önzberg in the east, in the southern Solothurn Plateau.

The area of ​​3.4 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the gently undulating moraine landscape in the outer water office, which was formed by the glacial Rhône glacier. The area extends from the lower forest southward over the plain to the west of the Inkwilersees and the slope of Etziken up to the heights of Cholholz and Eichwald, where 523 m above sea level. M. the highest elevation of Etziken is achieved. From the municipality surface 1997 12 % came from settlements, 32 % of forest and woody plants and 56% to agriculture.

Neighbor municipalities are starting clockwise from the west: Hüniken, Subingen, Bolken, Aeschi (SO) and Horriwil. All adjacent municipalities also belong to the district water office.

To Etziken include some individual farms.

Population

With 769 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Etziken one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Solothurn. Of the residents 96.4 % are German, 0.8 % French-speaking and 0.6 % speak Italian ( as of 2000). The population of Etziken amounted in 1850 to 546 residents in 1900 to 490 inhabitants. During the 20th century, the population fluctuated always in the range 450-550 inhabitants. Only since 1970, a significant increase in population was recorded.

Economy

Etziken was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, the farming and fruit growing and cattle breeding and forestry have a certain role in the occupational structure of the population. Many other jobs are in the local retail industry and the services available, including enterprises of mechanical engineering, computer science, the construction industry and in fine mechanical workshops. In recent decades, the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the regions of Solothurn and Herzogenbuchsee.

Traffic

The community is conveniently comparatively quite well developed. It lies on the main road from Solothurn to Herzogenbuchsee. The nearest links to the A1 ( Bern- Zurich ) is located about 5 km from the center.

On 1 June 1857, the railway line from Herzogenbuchsee was taken to Solothurn in operation; the stop Etziken however, was only established in 1927. The disused track from 1992 is reactivated again today as part of Rail 2000, however, not be driven by regional trains. By bus to the BSU, which serves the route from Solothurn to Herzogenbuchsee, Etziken is connected to the network of public transport.

History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1252 under the name Ezzinchon. Later, the names Entzenkon ( 1329 ) published, Ertzenkon ( 1342 ), Etzikofen ( 1356) and Ezikon ( 1360 ). The name goes back to the Old High German personal name Ezzo. With a name ending in - iken (actually a drawing together of - igkofen ) it means as much as in the courts of the people of Ezzo, where so-called relocated farms are meant.

In the Middle Ages Etziken formed its own little rule. From the 14th century was a part of the territory to rule cheeks. After several changes of ownership Etziken came in 1466 with stops under the rule of Solothurn and the Bailiwick of war Stetten was assigned. Was not until the 1665 Treaty Wyniger on the high justice of Bern Solothurn. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798 ) belonged Etziken during the Helvetic Republic to the district Biberist and from 1803 to the district Kriegstetten, which was officially renamed in 1988 in the district water office.

Attractions

In the old town and some characteristic farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved. Etziken does not have its own church; it belongs to the parish Aeschi. On the forest hill south of Etziken is the water tower was built in 1931.
