European Parliament election, 2009 (Luxembourg)

The European elections in Luxembourg 2009 took place on June 7, 2009 simultaneously with the Luxembourg Parliament election. It was conducted as part of the EU-wide European elections held in 2009, with six of the 736 seats were awarded in the European Parliament in Luxembourg. The election was by proportional representation right after the D' Hondt method, the whole country was considered as a single constituency. Voters were panaschieren and awarded preferential votes.

Choice advertiser parties

At the election attended the same eight parties that competed also to the Luxembourg Parliament election. Four of them had already won at the 2004 European election seats. These were the Christian Social CSV ( 3 seats), the Social Democratic LSAP ( 1 seat), the green Déi Gréng ( 1 seat) and the liberal DP ( 1 seat). Results

The turnout was 90.8 %, which was the highest of all EU Member States ( overall average: 43.1 %). However, this is mainly due to the elective that existed only in Luxembourg and Belgium.

Despite losses, the CSV could keep clear as the strongest party. The voting rights of the other parties changed only slightly, the distribution of seats remained unchanged from the 2004 European elections.
