The 2009 European elections in Greece found on Sunday, June 7, 2009. It was conducted as part of the EU-wide European elections held in 2009, with 22 of the 736 seats were awarded in the European Parliament in Greece.

Election winner, the Socialist PASOK was at 36.7 %, followed by the conservative New Democracy ( ND) with 32.3 %.

Parties

The first Division of the Supreme Court ( Areopagus ) realized on 24 May to the parties and list compounds that met the legal requirements for participation in elections to the European Parliament. The Areopagus was by the parties and list those compounds that were applied for admission to the European election, seven parties disagree ( Democrats, the party responsible citizen, peasants and workers movement in Greece ( PA.EKE ), Alternative ecologists, party of the uprising of pensioners of Greece, Political Greco- European animal protection movement, Ecological animal rights activists Greece ), during a party affiliation ( SYRIZA ) was the participation of seven parties are not permitted ( DIKKI, Active citizens Movement, movement for the unity of action of the Left, Red, Xekinima, eco-socialists Greece, group ROZA ).

Electoral system in Greece

In Greece, there is a pure proportional representation according to lists. The seats are distributed among all the parties or list connections in relation to the total number of votes across the country. After a 3 -percent electoral threshold only get the list seats, representing more than 3 % of the valid votes.

As in most member countries, reduced the number of deputies to be delegated, in Greece from 24 to 22

Poll

The proportion of non-voters in the 2009 elections rose to 47.4 %. The participation of Greek residents of other countries of the European Union in the elections subsided ( it chose 25,888 voters from 36 413 at local embassies and consulates ).

  • New Democracy in Kastoria 45%, in Piraeus (2nd constituency) 21.78 %,
  • KKE in Samos 19.17 %, 3.86% in Evritania
  • LAOS in Iraklion 9.82%, 3.21% in Thessaloniki,
  • SYRIZA in Athens (1st constituency) 7.14%, 2.66% in Evros,
  • Environmentalists / Green in Athens (2nd constituency) 4.99%, 1.85% in Pella.
