European Parliament election, 2014 (United Kingdom)

The European elections in the UK in 2014 will be held as part of the 2014 European elections on 22 May 2014. In this election in the United Kingdom 73 of the 751 MPs are elected to the European Parliament.

Electoral system

The 73 members are elected in 12 constituencies. In each constituency, with the exception of Northern Ireland, the ratio option is applied separately. Between three and ten seats are allocated per constituency. In Northern Ireland a system of transferable Einzelstimmgebung is used.

Starting position

In the European elections of 2009, the Conservative Party strongest party, reaching 27 seats (including a seat for the Northern Ireland Ulster Conservatives and Unionists - New Force and an additional seat after the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty). The second strongest party was the EU - critical United Kingdom Independence Party ( UKIP ), while the then ruling Labour Party suffered heavy losses voting. With the British National Party (BNP ) for the first time drew a right-wing party in the UK, a European deputy.

The deputies of the Conservatives did not join as it was before the Group of the European People's Party ( EPP), but formed the new European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR). During the legislative session, there were several party or faction crossings, particularly on withdrawals from UKIP.
