European Trade Union Confederation

The European Trade Union Confederation ( ETUC English European Trade Union Confederation, ETUC ) is the European umbrella organization of trade unions based in Brussels ( Belgium). It represents 82 national trade union confederations from 36 countries and 12 European industry federations with a total of 60 million members.

History

The cross-sectoral organization was founded on February 9, 1973 by 17 trade union organizations from 15 countries and representing 29 million unionized members. It is a successor organization of the European Confederation of Free Trade Unions in the EEC and the " Trade Union Congress " of the EFTA States.

The first President of the ETUC was Victor Feather ( UK ), which was supported by three vice-presidents, including Heinz Oskar Vetter of the German Trade Union Federation ( DGB). The first General Secretary of the ETUC was Theo Rasschaert (Belgium ).

In 1974 the first Christian trade unions and the first former communist union member. 1991, the European trade union federations to full members; the ETUC introduces the observer status, get the ten leagues from Eastern Europe. 1995 frets from Eastern Europe are included as full members for the first time.

Structure

Congress

The Congress is the supreme body of the ETUC. It shall be convened every four years, the last meeting was in 2011 in Athens. The Congress elects only members of the Executive Committee and the President or the President. Furthermore, it determines the Secretary-General and his two deputies.

Executive Committee

The Committee meets four times a year and consists of representatives of the member organizations. It decides on the mandate and composition of the delegations of the European social dialogue.

Steering Committee

The Steering Committee is responsible for ensuring that the decisions of the Executive Board are implemented. This smallest of the ESD bodies meets eight times a year. It consists of 21 elected members of the Executive Committee.

Current Situation

President of the ETUC is since May 2011 Ignacio Fernández Toxo, the Spaniard. He succeeds the Swede Wanja Lundby Wedin of - the Landsorganisationen i Sverige ( LO), who held the position since May 2007. The ETUC is working with union actors from associated with the European Union countries and regions, and also cooperates with the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC).
