Evelyn is an English name and surname. As a first name it is mostly female, there are in the English language but also male bearers of the name, for example, Richard Evelyn Byrd. In German, however, the name is almost exclusively regarded as female.

Origin

Originally, the English form of the French name Aveline, which in turn is a diminutive of the Germanic name Ava. Since the sources of Ava is not sure busy, no reliable information can be given also to Evelyn. One possible interpretation would be smaller bird. The Irish variant of Aveline is Eibhlin, which was in anglizierter form to Eileen.

Today the name is used also as a development of Eve (see Eve).
