Genesis

Since that time Fantasia flopped at the box office and due to the collapse of the European market after the Second World War was a continuation for the time being not up for discussion. After the original at a re-release in 1969, however, celebrated unexpected successes, Roy E. Disney in 1990 finally tried to persuade the group to continue, and so they began in 1991 with the production. The music was chosen by Roy E. Disney, James Levine and the production staff. They chose the pieces of your own taste, which was a unique mixture. Roy Disney in person selected for example from the Pines of Rome.

A striking difference between the musical styles of the first and second part is the use of pianos. While no single piano was played in its predecessor, piano notes accompany the viewers and listeners by more than half of the film.

Fantasia 2000 includes a variety of technical innovations that later found its way into the everyday life of the movie studios. Thus, the segments Pines of Rome and The Steadfast Tin Soldier were primarily computer- animated. These animations were completed even before the release of Pixar's Toy Story in 1995. The Stag in the Firebird Suite was traced by computer -generated imagery to give a more coherent expression to the whole short film. The same technique was later used in the film Treasure Planet for the character of Long John Silver.

The producers were of the opinion pauses between the individual segments would be necessary to avoid overstretch the viewer. Some cut-scenes were filmed under the direction of Don Hahn. They decided against a single narrator and chose several celebrities for the speaking part of. So Steve Martin and Itzhak Perlman directing the Pines of Rome a, Quincy Jones keeps an introduction speech to Rhapsody in Blue, and Bette Midler tunes the audience at the Piano Concerto by Shostakovich one. James Earl Jones opened the Carnival of the Animals with director Eric Goldberg. Penn & Teller appear to announce the sorcerer's apprentice. After Micky, as in the first film, talks with Leopold Stokowski, he says a few words to Levine, just after the Pomp and Circumstance Marches moderating. The last short film, The Firebird Suite is announced by Angela Lansbury.

Background information

Unlike Fantasia, the film segments were produced consecutively for Fantasia 2000, which explains the long production life of approximately nine years.

Fantasia 2000 is the first animated feature film length, which was shown in IMAX theaters.

James Levine and Peter Schickele arranged to most of the items for use in the film, which usually led to a drastic reduction, especially in the Beethoven symphony that takes in the film only just over a minute. This was already handled a lesser extent in the first film so.

When used in the film recording of Rhapsody in Blue Bruce Broughton conducts the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In Sorcerer's Apprentice the original recording of Stokowski was reused from the first film. Both pieces were re-recorded for the official soundtrack album from the London Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Levine.

The premiere of the film took place in New York's Carnegie Hall, where the music was played live by Levine and the Philharmonia Orchestra.

The segment for Rhapsody in Blue was initially as an independent short film in the works before Fantasia was incorporated in 2000.

Originally, the Nutcracker segment should be reused from the first film, which is why the first trailer for Fantasia 2000 still contains scenes from this.

All characters that appear in the Rhapsody in Blue segment names were given, even if they are not mentioned in the finished film. For the final scene of this segment many colors were used on average, so you got problems with coloring, leading to the production of the next " masterpiece", Tarzan delayed.

The rights to the Firebird Suite, the Walt Disney Company had secured in 1940, then still draw with the project, a Firebird sequence for Fantasia. This idea was finally discarded, and taken up on the second part. Also a film on the steadfast tin soldier was planned already for Fantasia, however, you did not see then in a position to choose an appropriate piece of music, and dropped the idea.

Joe Grant worked as a single employee on both parts of the Fantasia movies.

Mickey Mouse and his girlfriend Minnie Mouse can be seen for a few frames when leaving the ark Noah in Pomp and Circumstance Marches. In addition, we recorded various beak and duck -shaped objects in the environment, so that the viewer Donald Duck subconsciously better integrated into its environment.

The 2010 released DVD and BluRay version is dedicated to the recently deceased in Roy E. Disney.
