Farges

Farges is a commune in the French department of Ain, in the Rhône -Alpes.

Geography

Farges is at 513 m above sea level. Level, about 19 kilometers west of the city of Geneva (air line). This former farm extends in the Pays de Gex: a scenic elevated location at the foot of the Jura Mountains below the Grand Cret d' Eau, on the western edge of the lake basin.

The area of ​​14.28 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the Pays de Gex. The area is divided into two very different parts of the natural area. The eastern part is occupied by the fertile plain at Jurafuß. This plateau, a molasse basin, which was formed by glacial Rhone glacier is drained to Annaz (right tributary of the Rhone ) from Biaz and its headwaters to the east. The streams flow through more or less deeply incised into the plateau erosion gullies. History

Is first mentioned Farges in 1337 under the name Apud Farges. For later times the names de Fargiis ( 1397 ) and Mensura de Farges ( 1497 ) have survived. The name goes back to the Old French word Lafarge ( blacksmith).

In the 14th century the village came under the suzerainty of the Counts of Savoy. Then Farges told the eventful history of the Pays de Gex, with which it finally reached in 1601 after the Treaty of Lyon in France. In the 17th century Farges formed its own little rule. The priory was founded by the monks of Nantua in the 13th century in Asserans was destroyed in 1536 by the Bernese.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint -Brice was built at the beginning of the 19th century. From the former seat of power of the square tower is obtained, which served as a dungeon. The Château de Lapeyrouse dates from the early 19th century.

Population

With 901 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Farges is one of the small communities of the department of Ain. Since the mid- 1960s, a significant population growth was recorded, which since 2000 have increased. Outside the old town center, numerous new single-family homes were built.

Economy and infrastructure

Farges was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by farming village. Today, there are some establishments of local small businesses. Many working population commuters who work in the larger towns of the Pays de Gex or as a frontier in the agglomeration of Geneva.

The place is a good infrastructure. It lies on the secondary road D984 which leads from Collonges along the Jurafuß to Saint -Genis -Pouilly. This was relieved by the construction of four-lane road D884 through the Pays de Gex. Another road connection with Puni. The former railway line that ran from Bellegarde- sur -Valserine to Divonne -les- Bains and also served Farges, was shut down. In its place today is a bus line.
