Field hockey at the 1948 Summer Olympics
In the XIV Olympic Games in London in 1948, a competition in hockey (men) was held. For the first time India took part as an independent nation in 1947 and in addition newly formed Pakistan. Great Britain took advantage of his role as host, founded a British Hockey Association and took the first time since 1920 and, at the Olympic hockey tournament. Germany was - like Japan - not admitted to these first Olympics after the Second World War.
The finals were held in the main stadium of the games, the Empire Stadium ( more commonly known as Wembley Stadium ) instead.
Tournament mode
Due to the increased number of participants, the organizing committee expanded the tournament from four to nine days, and increased the number of the venues for the group matches of two to three. Of the 16 teams reported 3 were not. The 13 participants played in three groups:
- Group A: Argentina, India, Austria, Spain
- Group B: Afghanistan, Britain, Switzerland, USA
- Group C: Belgium, Denmark, France, Netherlands, Pakistan
( - 2.C and 1.B - 1.C 1.A) for the semi-finals, the winner of Group A and B, and the First and Second Group C qualified. The third place was played, the other positions can not.
