Fierrabras (D 796; piano version of the overture op 76 ) is a heroic- romantic opera in three acts by Franz Schubert with spoken dialogue with a libretto by Joseph Kupelwieser. Schubert composed the opera in the period from May 25 to October 2, 1823; it was not performed in his lifetime.

Action

Emma, daughter of Charles the Great loves, secretly rejected by her father Knights Eginhard. Also Fierrabras, the son and commander of the Moorish princes Boland, had just successfully pulled against the Karl into battle, Emma loves and is committed also to Christianity. As a prisoner of the heroic Swiss francs Roland Fierrabras comes to the court of Charles, was pardoned, accepted the love affair of Emma and Eginhard, sets himself up for her selfless and friendship with Roland. Performances

After the failure of the first performance of Carl Maria von Weber's Euryanthe on 25 October 1823 already scheduled for early 1824 Fierrabras was canceled. Kupelwieser and Schubert write in their manuscript sources always the Romanized table wrong name variant Fierrabras. The Editorial Board of the New Schubert Edition, however, used the correct ( fier -à -bras ) - and therefore equally meaningful - name form Fierabras.
