Filiași

Filiaşi is a city in Dolj county in Lesser Wallachia in Romania.

Location

Filiaşi is situated in Lesser Wallachia in the southern foothills of the Carpathian mountains, in the plain of Jiu ( Shield ). The county town of Craiova is located about 35 km south-east.

History

The oldest archaeological finds in the region date back to the Bronze Age. In 1573 Filiaşi was first mentioned. Because of its strategic location at the confluence of Motru in the Jiu, the place was a trade and marketplace for centuries. Until the early 20th century Filiaşi was coined by the noble family Filişanu.

Population

As of the 2002 census, 18 802 inhabitants were registered in the city, including 17,905 Romanians and 891 Roma.

Traffic

Filiaşi is a major railway junction in the southwest Romania. Here branches off from the main trunk from Bucharest to Timisoara the railway line towards Simeria in Transylvania from. Regular bus service is inter alia to Craiova. Through the city's European roads lead 70 and 79, which share on the western outskirts.
