Segarcea

Segarcea is a small town in Dolj county in Lesser Wallachia in Romania.

Location

Segarcea located on a plateau in the west of the Wallachian Plain about 30 km north of the Danube. The county town of Craiova is located about 25 km north.

History

On the territory of the present town, the oldest archaeological finds from the time of the Getae and Dacians come. In addition, a coin from the time of the Roman emperor Hadrian ( 117-138 ) was discovered.

The oldest record of a manorial Segarcea dates from the year 1416 during the reign of Wallachian Prince Mircea cel Bătrân. A place of the same name is explicitly demonstrated since 1557. The inhabitants were at first mainly with livestock. During this time, was born in Segarcea a monastery, which was given together with the location in 1620, the Patriarchate of Alexandria. In the fields was until the end of the 17th century, mainly sorghum, maize grown since then.

1792 Segarcea received the right to hold markets. In 1854 there were in place for an uprising of serfs. Through the agrarian reform in 1864 serfdom was abolished. 1884 originated in Segearcea a large royal estate.

In the vicinity of the place German troops during the Second World War had a base that served the radio monitoring and aerial observation.

After the war was the nationalization of the royal estate. 1950 Segarcea seat of a Rajons. It lost this status in the course of administrative reform in 1968, but was declared at the same time to the city. Since then Segarcea developed into a local industrial center. The main industry is, however, continue to agriculture, particularly viticulture.

Population

1930 lived in Segarcea about 6,350 residents, including 250 Roma, the other Romanians. As of the 2002 census, 8,066 inhabitants were registered in the city, including 7,044 Romanians and 1,013 Roma.

Traffic

Segarcea lies on the railway line between Craiova and Calafat; there are several daily train connections to both cities. The railway line is important, especially for freight and into Bulgaria and will increase further in importance when about 2010 from a bridge over the Danube between Vidin Calafat and built.
