Formula 5000

The Motorsport Formula 5000 class was established around 1968 in the United States as one of the forerunners of the Champ Car series and existed until 1982.

It should have about the same engine output as the formula 1 at a reduced cost. For this purpose, we used American V8 series engines, for example, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile or Ford with a maximum of 5 liters = 5000 cc (hence the name ), whose power has been increased with turbochargers up to 500 hp. Several vehicles were introduced with smaller displacement of 3.5 to 4.7 l.

Known drivers from the Formula series, Mike Hailwood and Trevor Taylor.

The chassis manufacturer occurred:

  • McLaren
  • Lotus
  • Eagle
  • Lola
  • March Engineering
  • Chevron
  • Surtees

Except in the U.S., there was the Formula 5000 championship in the UK and Australia. Also show races were held in Australia, where the cars of Formula 5000 competed against Formula 1 Racing Car ( and expectedly subject ).
