Francesco Battaglini

Francesco Battaglini ( born March 13, 1823 in Mirabello, † July 8, 1892 in Bologna) was Archbishop of Bologna, Cardinal.

Life

On October 7, 1827 he received the Sacrament of Confirmation. He studied at the University of Bologna, where he received his doctorate in theology in 1848. He was ordained by Cardinal Carlo Oppizzoni on September 20, 1845 priests. After his graduation he taught until 1878 as a professor in philosophy and theology at the seminary in Bologna.

Pope Leo XIII. appointed him on 28 February 1879 Bishop of Rimini. He received his episcopal consecration Cardinal Raffaele Monaco La Valletta on March 9 of the same year. Co-consecrators were Archbishop Giulio Lenti, Auxiliary Bishop of Rome, and Carlo Laurenzi, Auxiliary Bishop of Perugia.

On 3 July 1882 he was appointed Archbishop of Bologna. Like almost all archbishops of Bologna since Scipione Caffarelli Borghese took him to the Pope on July 27, 1885 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Bernardo alle Terme in the College of Cardinals to.

Francesco Battaglini died on 8 July 1892, at the age of 69 years in Bologna and was temporarily buried in the chapel of the Carthusian monastery in Bologna. His body was transferred in October 1893 in the Bentivoglio chapel. He received in February of 2000, a new grave, which was blessed by the then Archbishop of Bologna, Cardinal Giacomo Biffi in the same year, in the parish church of Mirabello.
