Francis, Count of Vendôme

François de Bourbon ( * 1470, † October 30, 1495 in Vercelli ) was from 1477 until his death, Count of Vendôme. He was the eldest son of Count Jean de Bourbon VIII († 1478) and his wife Isabelle de Beauvau († 1474 ).

François came from a younger branch of the house of Bourbon, which was in turn by Royal Capetian origin by herleitete from Robert, the youngest son of King Louis IX. of the saint.

Life

As François was still a minor when his father died, his brother Louis de Joyeuse, Count of Grandpré, its territories, which were expanded in 1484 thanks to a royal gift to the baronies of Mondoubleau and Saint- Calais managed. At the coronation of King Charles VIII of France, he represented the county of Toulouse and assisted him in the 1488 trial of the Dukes of Brittany and of Orleans ( later King Louis XII. ), Who had risen against the Crown. 1494 François took part in the military campaign of Charles to Italy, whose aim was to conquer the Kingdom of Naples. After the capture of Florence, Rome and Naples, he fought on 6 July 1495 the Battle of Fornovo, after which the French army withdrew from Italy. On the march he fell ill and died at the Ruhr in Vercelli. His body was transferred to Vendome and buried in the Cathedral Saint -Georges.

Marriage and issue

François de Bourbon married on September 8, 1487 in La Fere Marie de Luxembourg- Ligny. She came from the French branch of the former Imperial House of Luxembourg and was the heiress of Pierre II. Marie brought the counties of St. Pol, Soissons, Marle, the Vice- county Meaux and the Seigneurie of Enghien in the marriage and died on 1 April 1547.
