Francis J. Haverfield

Francis John Haverfield FBA FSA ( born November 8, 1860 in Shipston, † October 1, 1919 on the Headington Hill at Oxford ) was a British historian and provincial Roman archaeologist.

After studying at Oxford University Haverfield deepened his studies in Berlin, where he came into contact with Theodor Mommsen. He worked as a tutor at the University of Oxford ( Christ Church), until he was promoted in 1907 to Camden Professor of Ancient History.

Haverfield was the first scholars of antiquity, the scientific dealt with the Roman monuments and inscriptions in Britain. He was the founder of the Roman Provinces Archaeology in Britain and one of the first researchers to systematically dealt with the Romanization of the Roman provinces.
