John Anderson (classical scholar)

John George Clark Anderson ( born December 6, 1870 in Edinkillie, Morayshire, † March 31, 1952 in Oxford ) was a British historian and epigraphists.

Anderson first studied with William Mitchell Ramsay of Aberdeen who sparked his interest in Asia Minor and its inscriptions. He then studied at Christ Church College in Oxford, where Francis John Haverfield became his teacher and he graduated in 1896. From 1896 to 1897 Anderson was touring with the Craven Fellowship of the British School at Athens Asia Minor. In 1899 he acquired the M. A. in Oxford. From 1900 to 1927 he taught at Christ Church College in 1919, he was appointed University Lecturer, Reader in Roman Epigraphy 1927. From 1927 to 1936, Anderson Camden Professor of Ancient History at Oxford University.
