Henry Stuart Jones

Sir Henry Stuart Jones ( born May 15, 1867 in Hunslet in Leeds, † June 29, 1939 in Tenby ) was a British classical scholar and historian.

Life and work

Jones was awarded a scholarship to the British School at Athens, was later director of the British School at Rome and finally 1920-27 Camden Professor of Ancient History at Trinity College, Oxford University. In 1927 he was appointed professor at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, where he learned Welsh. In Wales he worked among others also for the National Library of Wales and in 1929 and 1930, Vice-Chancellor of the federal University of Wales. He was Life Member of the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies.

In 1911 he took over together with Roderick McKenzie revision of the Greek - English Lexicon by Henry George Liddell and Robert Scott. They gave 1925 a preliminary 9th edition out; the completely revised version was published only after Jones ' death ( 1940).
