Francis Rawdon-Hastings, 1st Marquess of Hastings

Francis Rawdon -Hastings, 1st Marquess of Hastings KG ( born December 9, 1754 Ireland, † November 28, 1826 in Naples) was a British general and Governor-General of India.

Life

1771 he joined the British Army and took part in the 1775-1781 American War of Independence.

Was appointed by the stadium and Thannhausen an honorary citizen of Vienna Francis Rawdon together with Friedrich Ernst Graf Marshal Gottfried van Swieten and Johann Philipp Graf on 14 February 1797. He had about 12,000 guilders for the marriage of equipment donated 24 bridal couples who were married together in the cathedral.

In 1804 he married Flora Mure Campbell ( 1780-1840 ), Countess of Loudoun, with whom he had six children, including Flora Hastings.

In 1813 he was appointed governor-general of India. Between 1814 and 1816 he led the so-called Gurkha war and from 1817 to 1818 the Third Marathenkrieg.

After the end of the campaign, there was a dispute over the division of the spoils, the so-called Deccan Prize. The Bengal Army had been involved with the Rawdon -Hastings command ' in any hostilities. In contrast, the Army of the Deccan had ensured the majority of prey under General Hislop. Nevertheless, Rawdon demanded for himself and his army a share of the sale proceeds. The matter came before the Privy Council. This ruled that the Bengal Army by a claim to a share have that they had been present and enemy forces have committed.

In 1823 he returned to his homeland.

On November 28, 1826 Rawdon died aboard HMS Revenge, which lay at anchor off Naples. His body was brought to Malta and buried there after they had amputated his right hand. This was brought to England to be buried there with his wife.
