Francisco Claver

Francisco F. Claver, SJ ( born January 20, 1929 in Bontoc, Philippines, † July 1, 2010 in Manila ) was a Roman Catholic bishop in the Philippines. He was considered a prominent figure in the Catholic Church in Asia.

Life

Francisco Claver entered the Congregation of the Jesuits in Quezon City at, studied at the seminary in Baguio City, Philosophy at St. Berchmans College in India and theology at Woodstock College and has a PhD in anthropology at the University of Colorado at Boulder, USA. He received on 18 June 1961, the priestly ordination in Woodstock, Maryland, USA.

In 1969 he became Pope Paul VI. appointed Titular Bishop of Nationa and appointed the first prelate of the Prelature of Malaybalay. The episcopal ordination in Baguio City donated to him on August 22, 1969 Archbishop Carmine Rocco, Nuncio in the Philippines; Co-consecrators were Teofilo Bastida Camomot, Coadjutor Archbishop of Cagayan de Oro, and William Brasseur, CICM, Vicar Apostolic of Mountain Provinces ( Montagnosa ). With elevation of the Prelature of the diocese of Malaybalay 1982, he was appointed by Pope John Paul II, the first bishop; In 1984 he resigned his office. In 1995 he was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Bontoc - Lagawe. 2004 his age-related retirement request was granted.

Claver from 1973 to 1979 Member of the Pontifical Council for Dialogue with Non- believers in Rome from 1974 to 1978, the Episcopal Commission for non-believers in Manila Chairman. In 1983 he became chairman of the Episcopal Commission on Indigenous Filipinos. From 1995 to 1999 he was Chairman of the Commission for Social Justice and Peace of the Catholic Bishops' Conference CBCP.

In 1984 he became an associate member of the Institute for Church & Social. He was a regular visiting professor at the East Asian Pastoral Institute in Quezon City, an Institute of the Ateneo de Manila University. He was also secretary of the apostolate of the Jesuits in East Asia and Oceania.

Francisco Claver was one of the greatest minds of the Catholic Church in Asia. He was involved in the resistance against Ferdinand Marcos, dictator and president of the Philippines from 1965 until 1986.
