Francisco Marcó del Pont

Francisco Casimiro Marcó del Pont Ángel Díaz y Méndez (* 1777 in Vigo, Spain, † May 19 1819 in Lujan, Argentina) was a Spanish soldier and from 1815 to 1818, the last governor of Chile. He was one of the main characters of the Chilean independence and was canceled after the Battle of Chacabuco Chilean as Regent.

Early years

Marcó del Pont began his military career in the infantry in Zaragoza. In the Napoleonic Wars in the Iberian Peninsula, he fought exemplary against the French occupation army. He was still very young when he already ascended to the rank of Field Marshal.

Governor of Chile

In 1815 Marco del Pont was appointed governor of the Spanish colony of Chile, which he reached towards the end of the year in Valparaíso. When he took the leadership of the colony, he sent spies to Cuyo to find information about the armies of the Chilean independence fighters out. These were led by Bernardo O'Higgins and stayed on in Argentine territory. These armies would also later, crossing under the leadership of José de San Martín, the Andes and reach the independence of Chile.

Marco del Pont tried against the resistance fighters to suppress their efforts and thus maintain the Spanish rule with brutal severity. Some were exposed on islands such as the Juan Fernández Islands, others were killed.

End of the reign

Marco del Ponts reign ended on February 12, 1818 as the campaign for independence after the Battle of Chacabuco moved into the capital. Del Pont still tried to flee in order to achieve a transport of the Viceroy of Peru, which could have put him away. However, he was captured and detained in various prisons. He died on 19 May 1819 Prison Lujan, near Buenos Aires, after he was brought there from San Luis.
