Francisco Ribalta

Francesc Ribalta (Spanish: Francisco Ribalta ) ( born June 2, 1565 in Solsona, † January 14, 1628 in Valencia) was a Spanish painter.

Life

Ribalta probably learned from Juan Fernandez de Navarrete, called El Mudo. Ribalta was well acquainted with Italian art, but was one of the first Spanish painter who did not imitate the Italian style of the time. Only one picture, " The Crucifixion " (1582 ), remained from his previous work obtained. 1598 Ribalta moved to Valencia, where he opened a workshop and was supported by Archbishop Juan de Ribera. His best works belong to this period. They are characterized by their realism and the shape of the light and simple composition. The works that emerged after 1612, include " The Singer ", " Christ embraces Saint Bernard " and " Portacoeli retable ". Ribalta was the forerunner of the new direction of Spanish painting, showing unaffected simplicity, dramatic content and religious devotion.
