Frangy

Frangy is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region. It is the capital of the canton in the Arrondissement Frangy Saint -Julien -en- Genevois.

Geography

Frangy is located on 323 m above sea level. M., about halfway between Annecy and Bellegarde- sur -Valserine, 20 km northwest of the town of Annecy (air line). The village extends in the valley of Usses at the mouth of a short side of Bach, south of the Montagne de Vuache, in Genevois.

The area of ​​9.69 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the western Genevois. Main settlement area is the Valley of the Usses. It is crossed by the Usses, a left tributary of the Rhône in a 500 m wide flat valley from east to west. The valley is deepened about 150 to 200 m into the surrounding plateau. Both in the south than in the north, the municipality's area extends to the adjacent plateau. With 562 m above sea level. M. is achieved the highest elevation of Frangy at the foot of the Montagne de Vuache.

History

The territory of Frangy been inhabited since the Neolithic period and during the Roman period, which could be detected by various remains. First mentioned in a document of the place is in 1119 under the name Frengiacum. Later, the names Fringe, Fringy and finally Frangy published. The name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Firmus.

Since time immemorial Frangy lay on an important transport route from the lower Rhone Valley to Geneva. It belonged in the Middle Ages Kastlanei Chaumont, which was under the Counts of Geneva. In the 17th century Frangy got to Savoy and henceforth shared its fate. By 1860 it belonged to the District of Saint -Julien -en- Genevois, then it was raised to the capital of the newly created Canton Frangy.

Attractions

The church of Saint - Aquilin was built in neo-classical style in 1843 on the site of an earlier building in 1975 and extensively restored. The Rectory dates from the 17th century.
