Franklin Gómez

Franklin Gomez Matos (* August 5, 1986 in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic ) is a Puerto Rican wrestler. He became in 2011 Vice World Champion in free style at featherweight.

Career

Franklin Gomez grew up in Brandon, Florida, where he also lives. He arrived there in 1998 at the high school for wrestling. His first coach was Pedro Rojas. Since 2004, he attended Michigan State University in East Lansing ( Michigan). He also belongs to the Spartan Wrestling Club and wrestles with the free style. The first major successes came in 2005, when he was U.S. junior champion bantamweight. In 2006 he won at the American students Championship and qualified for the U.S. World Cup qualification tournament in which he but lost in the quarterfinals in bantamweight title against Henry Cejudo. In 2008 he occupied at the U.S. students Championship featherweight behind Daniel Dennis the 2nd place and 2009 behind Jordan Oliver Coleman and Scott 3rd place.

2010 Franklin Gómez decided in future to start for Puerto Rico to participate in international championships can. For this country, he finished at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez (Puerto Rico) featherweight equal 3rd place. At the World Championships this year in Moscow he was defeated, however, at featherweight in his first fight against Malkhaz Kurdiani from Georgia and finished only 20th place.

Very successful then was the year 2011 for him. In May he won in Rionegro (Colombia ) the title of Pan American champion at featherweight before Canadians Tyley Walker and Gabriel Garcia Sanchez from the Dominican Republic. In July, he won the Grand Prix of Spain in Madrid, defeating there in the final Tim Schleicher of Germany. In September, he launched at the World Championships in Istanbul and came there to victories over Malkhaz Zarkua, Georgia, Ri Jong Myong of North Korea, Lee Seung- chul of South Korea, Zelimkhan Chusseinow from Azerbaijan and Dauren Schumgasijew from Kazakhstan. But in the final he was defeated by the multiple Russian champion and Olympic champion Besik Serodinowitsch Kuduchow convincingly on points (0-2 rounds, 0:5, 0:1 points). He thus became vice-world champion, a great success for him. In October, he finally won also at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara ( Mexico) before Guillermo Torres Cervantes, Mexico, Fernando Iglesias, Argentina and Yowlys Bonne Rodriguez from Cuba.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London Franklin Gomez lost in his first fight against Besik Serodinowitsch Kuduchow, whom he had defeated at the Grand Prix of Germany in Dortmund in April 2012, just on points (1:2 rounds, 2:4 points). In the consolation round, he met Yogeshwar Dutt from India, against which he, somewhat demotivated, smooth losing and therefore only came to 15th place.

At the World Championships 2013 in Budapest Franklin Gomez came to victories over bazaar Basargurujew, Kyrgyzstan and Hwang Ryong - hak, North Korea, before he lost to Bechan Goigerejew, Russia. As this became world champion, he was able to wrestle in the consolation round, where he zunäüchst Andrei Perpelita from Moldova defeated, but then lost to Artur Alrakeljan from Armenia and thus finished 7th.
