Frédéric Covili

Frédéric Covili ( born November 14, 1975 in Moutiers, Savoie département ) is a French former alpine skier. In the first years of the 21st century he was one of the world's best runners in the discipline of giant slalom. He won two World Cup races, was the winner of the giant slalom World Cup rankings of the season 2001/ 02 and third in the World Cup 2001.

Biography

For the first time in the international spotlight Covili stood at the Junior World Championships 1994 in Lake Placid, when he was first in the slalom and the combined score as well as third in the Super -G. His first World Cup race, he played on 11 November 1995; slalom in Beaver Creek, he was immediately ninth.

However, during the next five years Covili could not confirm these services. It was only in December 2000, he scored again in the top ten rankings. In the Ski World Championship 2001 in St. Anton am Arlberg, he won the bronze medal rather surprising in the giant slalom, behind the Swiss Michael of the Norwegian Kjetil André Grünigen and Aamodt.

In the 2001 /02 season Covili proved to be the best Giant Slalom skiers in the world. He achieved two victories in World Cup races and was second three times. With these services, he decided the giant slalom World Cup itself. At the end of the season followed the French championship. In 2003 he reached three more podium finishes and was again French champion. In 2002 he also participated in the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City and was ranked 15 in the giant slalom.

In December 2003 Covili crashed in the giant slalom on the Gran Risa in Alta Badia hard, suffered a torn ACL in his left knee and was sidelined the entire season. Nearly a year later, it happened just before the World Cup the same mishap, this time in the right knee; again he fell out for the rest of the season. Then Covili could not to build on its previous achievements and rarely achieved rankings in the World Cup points ranking. On 21 January 2009 he announced his resignation after he had his season goal of qualifying for the World Championships in Val d'Isere missed. In his last race eleven days earlier in Alta Badia, he was driven to 34th place.
