Gaétan Duchesne

Gaétan Duchesne ( born July 11, 1962 in Québec City, Québec, † April 16, 2007 ) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player and coach. During his career he played for the Washington Capitals, Quebec Nordiques, Minnesota North Stars, San Jose Sharks and Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League and worked as an assistant coach with the Quebec Remparts in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. His son Jeremy is also a professional hockey player, playing on the position of the goalkeeper.

Career

Duchesne first played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Quebec Remparts. After him, the Washington Capitals had selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1981 in the eighth round to 152 place, he managed to 1981/82 season to the surprise of all the jump into the NHL squad caps. The French-Canadians remained until the end of the 1986/87 season in the team of the capital city, before the summer of 1987 in exchange for Dale Hunter and Clint Malarchuk together with Alan Haworth and a first-round pick in the NHL Entry Draft in 1987, with the later Joe Sakic has been selected, was transferred to the Quebec Nordiques.

After only two seasons in his hometown, the left winger to the Minnesota North Stars had to change. With the team in 1991 he reached the final of the Stanley Cup, where they lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games.

For the 1993/94 season, the North Stars left Minnesota and moved to Dallas to. As the Dallas Stars with a new game philosophy had no more use for Duchesne, they gave him away to the San Jose Sharks, who sent him to one and a half years to the Florida Panthers. After only 13 games in the already shortened season 1994/ 95 when the Panthers he finished his NHL career and moved back to his hometown of Quebec City. There he ran in the International Hockey League as a player and assistant coach for the Quebec Rafales. After the 1997/98 season, he finished his career as a player.

He then worked in his hometown from 2000 to 2002 as an assistant coach with the Quebec Remparts, where he had played as a junior.

Duchesne died unexpectedly on 16 April 2007 at the age of 44 years in fitness training probably due to a cardiac arrest. In 1028 NHL games, he scored 179 goals and prepared another 254 before.
