Gemma Hayes
Gemma Hayes ( born August 11, 1977 in Ballyporeen, County Tipperary ) is an Irish singer- songwriter. She has released four albums, which are primarily attributable to the alternative rock and folk.
Life and work
Gemma Hayes grew up as one of seven siblings in a musical family in Ballyporeen. She got piano lessons and taught himself to play the guitar. They first went to a boarding school and then the University of Dublin. Hayes, who had occupied himself with music and writing poetry since her school days, the study broke off after some time and focused instead on a career as a musician. She went solo in nightclubs of Dublin and earned their livelihood as employees in a laundromat. After they had put together a band, they could in 2001 to sign a contract with the French indie label Source Records, a subsidiary of EMI. In the same year, their first EP was released 4.35am with pop / rock pieces.
After another EP followed in May 2002, Hayes ' debut album, Night On My Side. It was created in collaboration with her then boyfriend Dave Odlum, who played among others in the Dublin rock band The Frames, and Dave Fridmann, bassist of Mercury Rev. The album incorporates elements of genres Shoegazing and noise rock, to folk and some pop. It was particularly successful in Ireland, where it reached number 8 on the charts. Also in the UK album charts, it was also placed at number 52. It was praised by critics and reached the shortlist for the Mercury Music Prize. Commercially, it was, however, not a great success. Immediately after release of Night On My Side Hayes took the album on tour, including by Germany, where she performed at Rock am Ring and the Orange Blossom Special Festival.
In the following two years, Hayes drew largely withdrew from the music business. However, they wrote, among other things in common with Adam Duritz of the Counting Crows song Hazy for live album New Amsterdam. Duritz in turn took later in the song Washington Square Album Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings (2008) to Hayes reference by texted " I wandered the highways from Dublin to Berkeley and I heard the song birds of Ballyporeen ". Hayes, who suffered notice regarding its impact album from writer's block, retired to Ventry. After she had finally conceived the album in its fundamentals, she went to Los Angeles to find co- musicians and record it.
Appeared in 2005 Hayes ' second album, The Roads Do not Love You co-produced with Joey Waronker, including drummer for Beck and REM. On the more pop- stressed plate also were the musicians Smokey Hormel (Tom Waits ) and Josh Klinghoffer as well as the violin playing Lisa Germano involved. The single from the undercover, written by Hayes and co-author Roger Joseph Manning Jr. of Jellyfish, placed himself at number 38 in the Irish and number 60 in the British charts. With this success, and number 13 in the Irish album charts, the album was relatively successful, nevertheless Source announced the following year, Hayes ' record deal.
2006 Hayes was awarded a Meteor Ireland Music Award for Best Irish Female category.
Their following two albums released under her own label, Hayes Gemma Hayes. First, they brought out in 2008 The Hollow Of Morning, which she had recorded within one year together with Dave Odlum. Moreover involved Kevin Shields as a guest guitarist, Paul Noonan ( Bell X1 ) on drums and Joe Chester as a background singer. Musically, The Hollow Of Morning oriented with its original guitar sound again more on Hayes ' debut album. It reached # 12 in the Irish album charts.
After Hayes had lived four years in Los Angeles, where The Hollow Of Morning arose, she returned again in 2010 back to Ireland. Here was released in 2011 their fourth album Let It Break. It was originated in France and Dublin, again in collaboration with David Odlum, and Paul Noonan as a background singer. In addition to rock, folk and pop to find it the first time electronic elements. This album also was also placed in the Irish charts and reached number 11
In addition to her albums and concerts Hayes also works in the film and advertising industry. So she was on the soundtrack of several television shows such as Grey's Anatomy, One Tree Hill and The Vampire Diaries involved and has composed music for commercials adidas, Gap and Hershey's.
