In the following 21 years Schröder visited various regions in Europe. At first, he lived for a time in Northern Germany before he moved on to Italy. He stayed five years in Venice, where he produced copies of old masters, vistas painted and in contact with the painter Rosalba Carriera pastel (1675-1757) was. Next in Rome, he drew his inspiration, among others, by Carlo Dolci (1616-1686), Carlo Maratta (1625-1713), Francesco Trevisani (1656-1746) and other Baroque painters. He also lent itself to quick and superficial representation, which belonged to this period of Italian art. In Paris Schröder received a new impetus by the painter Noël -Nicolas Coypel ( 1690-1734 ). After that, he lived for seven years in London, where he Godfrey Kneller of (1646-1723) work and Michael Dahl Portrait art was influenced.

When Daniel von Krafft died in 1724, Schroeder was ordered to Sweden to follow his old teacher in December of the same year as a royal Hofporträtmaler. Shortly thereafter married Anna Schroeder 1727 Birgitta Spöring. Frederick I attached great importance to its Konterfeikünstler and let Schröder numerous portraits of himself and his wife Ulrike Eleonora make. 1745 appointed to Schröder Hofintendanten. This Schröder was one of the last Swedish artist of the 18th century with mainly Italian influence.
