George Dole

George Stuart Dole ( born January 30, 1885 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, † September 6, 1928 in Winthrop, Maine) was an American wrestler. He was Olympic champion in 1908 in free style at featherweight.

Career

George S. Dole was born in Michigan and grew up in Maine. He started at the high school along with his twin brother Louis with the rings in free style. In 1902, both brothers enrolled at Yale University, and were soon at the best wrestlers this university. From 1903 found regularly test fights between Yale Univ. and Columbia Univ. instead. George won it until 1908 in all its battles.

In 1905 he also won the bantamweight title at the inaugural Eastern Championships ( Championship situated on the east coast of the USA states ). In 1907 George in Newark, NJ, also masters of the AAU bantamweight. He defeated the Olympic champion of 1904 while George Mehnert. It was Mehnert's only defeat in seven years.

1908 have been nominated for the Olympic Games Mehnert and George. Since both were Bantamgewichtler, George Dole voluntarily went up a weight class higher in the featherweight. He was then in London in this weight class with four wins Olympic gold medalist.

After completing his studies, George S. Dole was as a wrestler coach at Yale University until 1917. active. He then joined the Navy and was after his time in the Navy working as a professor of economics at St. Lawrence. George S. Dole died in 1928 of a heart attack. For his contributions to the sport wrestler he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1997.
