Georges Mantha

Georges Mantha ( born November 29, 1908 in Lachine, Quebec; † 25 January 1990) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player and coach, who played in his time from 1925 to 1943 among others for the Canadiens de Montréal in the National Hockey League. His older brother, Sylvio was also a professional hockey player.

Career

Georges Mantha began his career as a hockey player with the amateur team Montreal Bell Telephone, where he was active from 1925 to 1928. For the 1928/29 season, he received good performance a contract with the Canadiens de Montréal from the professional National Hockey League. With the team he won for the seasons 1929/30 and 1930/31 respectively to the prestigious Stanley Cup. In the following years, the winger became a fixture in the Canadiens and in the entire league. In 1937 and 1939 he took part in the charity matches for the families of the deceased Howie Morenz and Babe Siebert. Initially he started the season 1940/41, with the Canadiens, he was discharged after a presentation in six games to the New Haven Eagles of the American Hockey League. For this he scored in 49 games 31 scorer points, including 16 goals, and he was elected to the second all-star team of the AHL. In the following two years he ran for the League rival Washington Lions, where he took over the position as head coach of Ching Johnson at mid-season 1942/43. At the end of the season, the Lions were inactive and Mantha ended his players and coaching career.
