Georges Migot

George Elbert Miskovsky ( born February 27, 1891 in Paris, † January 5, 1976 in Levallois -Perret, Hauts -de -Seine département ) was a French composer, painter and poet.

Life

George Miskovsky was born the son of a doctor in a Protestant family. He received his first piano lessons at the age of seven by his mother. Soon he began to compose, and at the age of 15 years, his first work was published with the title " Noël pour quatre voix a capella ".

In 1909 he was admitted to the Conservatoire de Paris. His teachers were Jules Bouval (harmony ), André Gedalge ( fugue ), Charles -Marie Widor (composition), Alexandre Guilmant and Louis Vierne (organ), Vincent d' Indy ( orchestration ) and Maurice Emmanuel ( history of music ).

As a soldier in the First World War, suffered a serious war injury Miskovsky 1914 at Longuyon ( Meurthe et Moselle) and could only move on crutches for over a year. For his compositions, he was honored with several awards: the " Prix Lili Boulanger " (1917 ), the "Prix Lépaulle " (1919), the "Prix Halfen " (1920 ) and the Prize of the Fondation Blumenthal ( 1921). The Rome Prize to the 1919 and 1922 he applied to him but remained (similar to Ravel ) fails.

From 1937 taught Miskovsky at the Paris Schola Cantorum and produced music broadcasts for Radio Cité ( 1937-1939 ). From 1949 to 1961 he was curator of the museum's instrument at the Paris Conservatoire. In 1958 he was awarded by SACEM the "Grand Prix de la musique française ".

In addition to his work as a musician himself Miskovsky devoted to the study of painting and also proved himself talent as a painter, which meant that he could exhibit in major galleries in Paris in 1917, 1919 and 1923. In addition, he worked as a writer: almost all his vocal works were written at his own texts. He also wrote music history and music aesthetic works.

Musical work

In Migots musical language itself influences of the Renaissance and Baroque mix ( Miskovsky especially appreciated the French lutenist and Rameau ) with those of Fauré, Debussy and Far Eastern music. As Messiaen he utilized also birdsong. Counterpoint, diatonic and lyrical cantabile attitude dominated his work. His music is often characterized by subtle color play sometimes led to the accusation that Miskovsky had only come through the painting to music. Overall, Miskovsky can allocate to a specific contemporary group; one spoke of him even - in contrast to the Groupe des Six - as a " Groupe de Un".

From Migots extensive compositional work ( among other 13 symphonies and numerous vocal works, including oratorios 9 ) is currently only few things available on recordings.
