Giacomo Simoneta

Giacomo Simonetta (* 1475 in Milan, † November 1, 1539 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Catholic Church.

Giacomo Simonetta was a member of the Roman Curia and also Bishop of Pesaro 1528-1539, then of Perugia ( 1535-1538 ). Simonetta was from 1536 to 1537 Bishop of Sutri, but resigned from this office back so that his nephew Ludovico Simonetta could take over this diocese. He was from 1538 to 1539 Bishop of Nepi.

Pope Clement VII commissioned him to investigate the marriage of Henry VIII of England after he had actually intended for Paolo Capizucchi, but which no longer was in Rome. Simonetta came to his investigation to the conclusion to explain the marriage is not void.

In May 1535 it created by Pope Paul III. cardinal and his titular church of San Ciriaco transferred all terms Diocleziane. Simonetta has been a champion of ecclesiastical reform and sat since 1535 in a designated Commission ( together with the Cardinals Giovanni Piccolomini, Lorenzo Campeggi, Girolamo Ghinucci, Gasparo Contarini, Alessandro Cesarini and Rodolfo Pio de Carpi ). In November 1537 he became cardinal priest of Saint Apollinare. In 1518 he was a member of the Cardinal Commission for convening and planning of a reform council. With him this committee were also the Cardinals Giovanni Domenico De Cupis, Lorenzo Campeggi, Girolamo Ghinucci, Gasparo Contarini, Gian Pietro Carafa, Giacomo Sadoleto, Alessandro Cesarini and Reginald Pole.

He mediated between the cities of Florence and Siena, fought over the control of Montepulciano.
