History

The Giessen Region was established on 1 January 1981 by the Hessian state government under Prime Minister Holger Börner (SPD ) (Law on the reorganization of administrative districts and the regional planning of 15 October 1980). He is next to Darmstadt and Kassel, the third government district in Hesse. From 1945 to 1968, there was in Hessen ever three administrative districts (Darmstadt, Kassel and Wiesbaden). 1968, the administrative district of Wiesbaden, however, was dissolved and its territory assigned to the Region of Darmstadt.

Renaming

The District President Lars Witteck (CDU ) in 2010 requested the renaming of the district of Gießen in the region of Middle Hesse, because thereby the regional consciousness of citizens would be strengthened. Witteck said that the renaming could be a nice gift to mark the 30th anniversary in 2011.
