Life

Stage career

Madia graduated from 1976 to 1984 training at the Ballet School of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. In 1984, he passed from his diploma as a ballet dancer in the production Le mariage du ciel et de l' enfer [ The Marriage of Heaven and Hell ] choreographed by Roland Petit. He had his first engagement then 1984-1985 also at La Scala. His first solo game Madia danced there in Jungle, a choreography by Andy De Groat. From 1985 to 1988, Madia solo dancer with the Ballet du XXe siècle by Maurice Béjart at the opera house Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels. With Béjart Madia was incorporated in 1987 to Lausanne, where Béjart had moved his company. From 1987 to 1988 he was principal dancer in the Béjart Ballet Lausanne.

This was followed by further commitments from 1988-1990 as a solo dancer in the United States, the Pennsylvania Ballet and the Milwaukee Ballet. There Madia was seen in parts of the classical repertoire among other solo roles in works by George Balanchine, Robert Taylor, William Forsythe, Merce Cunningham, and Richard Tanner. From 1988 to 1991 Madia went together with Rudolf Nureyev and soloists from the Ballet of the Paris Opera with Nureyev and Friends on a world tour, where he performed several times in two pas de deux with Nureyev, including the choreography La Pavane you More and Le Chant du Compagnon Errant.

In the 1990s, had Madia engagements as a solo dancer with the San Francisco Ballet (1990-1992), again at the Pennsylvania Ballet as a principal dancer (1992-1993), as a principal dancer at the Italian ballet company Aterballetto (1993) and as a solo dancer with the Zurich Ballet ( 1995-1997).

Choreography and direction

1997 ended Giorgio Madia its active dance career. Madia has since worked as ballet master, choreographer and in recent years increasingly also as a director. From 1997 to 1999 he was a teacher and ballet master at the Balletto di Toscana in Florence. 2000-2001 he was under the direction of Richard Wherlock Ballet Master and Choreographic Assistant at the Berlin Ballet at the Komische Oper.

In October 2000, he was artistic director and chief choreographer at the Teatr Wielki in Łódź.

He was the first ballet master of the newly founded Ballet Basel 2001. Since 2002 he has been chief choreographer of Mörbisch. In 2003 he took over at the new production of the operetta Giuditta by Franz Lehár at short notice direct. From 2003 to 2005, Madia ballet director of the Vienna Volksoper. There sat Madia two separate full-length ballets. In March 2004, there had his choreography Nudo, with music by Johann Sebastian Bach and Béla Fischer, Premiere. In January 2005, followed by Alice, a production based on themes by Lewis Carroll with music by Nino Rota. The operetta The Merry Widow, (directed by Helmuth Lohner ) for which Giorgio Madia had the Zurich Opera House created the choreography in 1997, returned in 2004 to the board back; the recovery was recorded and released in 2004 as a DVD.

Since 2005, Madia has worked freelance. For the Teatr Wielki in May 2006 he choreographed the ballet Sleeping Beauty. This production was awarded the Golden Mask for the best production of the season 2005/2006. In May 2007 there followed the production of Cinderella, which was awarded in the 2006/2007 season with the Golden Mask in the categories of Best Director, Best Set and Best Costumes. In October 2008, Madia created in Łódź, the choreography for The Nutcracker. In the 2008/2009 season at the Balletto di Milano followed its own choreography of Romeo e Giulietta, by William Shakespeare with music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. In September 2009 the premiere of his ballet evening Chopin Imaginaire with music by Frédéric Chopin followed the Staatstheater Cottbus. This was followed by another full-length productions of OZ - The Wonderful Wizard (2011, for the Berlin State Ballet ), Harlequin ( a dance comedy for the Staatstheater Cottbus, Ferdinand Hérold La fille mal gardée (2012 ) and Coppélia (2013 ), both for the opera house Wrocław)

Since 2006, Madia is also active as a director in musical theater. His debut as a director took over Madia in February 2006 with a production of the musical revue Is not Misbehavin ' with the music of Fats Waller in the Vienna Chamber Opera. In December 2007, Madia conducted its first opera direction in the production of Tales of Hoffmann by Jacques Offenbach at the Teatr Wielki in Łódź. This production was in the 2007/2008 season also awarded the Golden Mask for Best Director.
