Giovanni Morone

Giovanni Girolamo Morone ( born September 25, 1509 Milan, † December 1, 1580 in Rome) was a Catholic bishop and cardinal. He was papal legate in Germany and at the Council of Trent, and finally its president.

In 1536 he was appointed Bishop of Modena, but at the same time by Pope Paul III. sent to Germany to watch the progress of the Reformation, and attended the Colloquy of Worms and the Diet of Regensburg in 1541. On 2 June 1542, he was called by Pope Paul III. elevated to cardinal priest of Santi Vitale, Valeria, Gervasio e Protasio, got 1549 Santo Stefano al Monte Celio and 1553 San Lorenzo in Lucina as titular church. In 1548 he was held Bishop of Novara and 1555 papal legate at the Diet of Augsburg, in 1557 but jailed in the Castel Sant'Angelo, because he allegedly betrayed the rights of the Church in Augsburg, and caught up to the death of Pope Paul IV in 1559. 1563 appointed him Pius IV as President of the Council of Trent; after he had appeased the resistance of Emperor Ferdinand I. against his decisions, he brought this to a conclusion. He looked even more in 1576 for the Catholic Church in Germany at the Diet of Regensburg. From 1570 until his death was Morone Cardinal Bishop of Ostia and Cardinal Dean.
