Gloria Holden

Gloria Holden ( born September 5, 1903 in London, England; † March 22, 1991 in Redlands, California ) was a British- American actress. Lasting fame she reached through the films Dracula's Daughter and The Life of Emile Zola.

Life

Gloria Holden was born in London but grew up in the United States. There she trained as a dancer and operetta singer. She was active since the early '30s on Broadway until she was asked mid 30 's by Clarence Brown to an audition to Hollywood. She got a contract with Universal Studios and immediately a major role that made her a star.

She became famous through the film Dracula's Daughter, in which she played the title role. This put them on a mysterious and exotic way represents a year later, she starred in The Life of Emile Zola, which won the Oscar for best film, the female lead. But such success as these two films they never got back, from now on, she has served in major films like The test pilot or Lord of the Wild West, only minor supporting roles.

The next year she starred in mostly those lesser films with lesser-known performers, and was also there to a supporting actress. After small roles in comedies such as Greyhound and the Lady ( 1947), Lovers for all eternity (1956) and The great Aunt (1958 ) she moved back in 1958 after about 40 films from the film business.

In addition to her work as an actress Holden also worked for radio. So she worked before her first film casting for half a year for the radio show of Eddie Cantor. In 1943, she said the mother role in the teen comedy series Meet Corliss Archer of CBS. From 1944 until her death in 1991 from a heart attack she was married to William Hoyt. They had one son, who died in 1970 with only 26 years.
