Goodluck Jonathan

Goodluck Ebele Jonathan ( born November 20, 1957 in Otuoke, Nigeria ) since 6 May 2010 and President of Nigeria. From 2005 to 2007 he was governor of the Nigerian state of Bayelsa, from 2007 he held the position of Vice President of Nigeria.

Life

Policy

As a member of the People's Democratic Party Goodluck Jonathan was elected Vice- Governor of Bayelsa 1999. When the governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha had been dismissed in December 2005 on charges of corruption of his office, Goodluck Jonathan became his successor. Meanwhile, the Commission for Economic and Financial Crime ( EFCC ) determined but also against his own wife Patience Jonathan Faka.

In December 2006, Umaru Yar'Adua was elected by delegates of the PDP candidate for the presidential elections in April 2007. This appointed in consultation with the party leadership Goodluck Jonathan to his running mate (known as running mate ). The two candidates of the PDP represented so that both the Muslim north as well, by Goodluck Jonathan, the Christian Niger Delta. On 23 April 2007, the Nigerian Electoral Commission declared the candidate pair with 70% of votes to the winners of the election. Jonathan took office on 29 May 2007.

On 20 April 2007 to have been committed on Goodluck Jonathan, according to the AFP news agency, a stop when he was staying in a hotel in the city of Yenagoa in the southern state of Bayelsa. But the politicians had not been violated.

After a power vacuum of more than two months due to a serious illness Umaru Yar'Adua, the Nigerian Parliament Goodluck Jonathan appointed on 9 February 2010 for " acting president ", who is charged with the temporary management of official duties. On 17 March, he dissolved the government.

Shortly after President Yar'Adua's death, Jonathan was sworn in as the new President of Nigeria.

June 30, 2010 Jonathan pulled the Nigerian national football team due to the preliminary round departure at the Football World Cup 2010 for two years from all international tournaments back and undid the bandage on NFF so that a new team can be built up in peace. This is contrary to the statutes of the world governing body FIFA, which prohibits government interference in the affairs of the national associations. Therefore FIFA spokesman Nicolas Maingot presented to the President a few days later an ultimatum to July 5, 2010, to take back the decision. If this is not done, Nigeria would be suspended by the World Association. Shortly before the expiration of the ultimatum picked Jonathan to the decision, so that Nigeria was allowed to stay on FIFA member.

Goodluck Jonathan won the presidential elections in April 2011. Despite unrest with hundreds of bodies, observers rated the election as the fairest since more than ten years. On 29 May 2011 he was sworn in for the second time within a year as Nigerian President.

2013 tightened his government's criminalization of homosexual acts and is assisted among others by the Catholic Bishops' Conference Nigerian.
