Gorong archipelago

The Indonesian Gorom Islands ( Kepulauan indon. Gorom, also Gorong Islands or Goram Islands) belong to the Southern Moluccas.

Geography

The Gorom Islands lie to the west of New Guinea, in the outer Banda arc. Here they are located between the island of Seram in the north and the Watubela Islands in the south. To the east is the Ceram Sea, west of the Banda Sea. The Gorom Islands form the sub-district ( Kecamatan ) Pulau Gorom ( German Gorom - island), who the government district ( kabupaten ) Ostseram ( Seram Timur Bagian ) belongs. The county is part of the province of Maluku. Pulau Gorom is divided into eleven Desa ( " villages ").

The largest island is Gorom with the places Miran ( Miren ) on the east coast, Ondor ( Ondur ) in the northwest and Hur in the southwest. To the west lies the island of Panjang with the place Wisalem in the south and a little further south, the island Manawoka with the places Arbau in the north, Amar, Derra and finally Nama in the south.

Population

Live on the islands 27,285 inhabitants ( 2010). Traditionally speaking to them the Austronesian language Geser - Gorom, which is also spoken in the extreme Southeast Serams and the small islands between Seram and the Gorom Islands.
