Grand Valley AVA

Grand Valley AVA is a November 25, 1991, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives recognized wine region in the U.S. state of Colorado.

Location

The Grand Valley American Viticultural Area located in the west of the municipality of Grand Junction in Mesa County in the west of the state. The area lies within an intensively farmed area called Grand Valley along the Colorado River. Since the late 19th century, up to 48 x 8 km wide area is processed and George A. Crawford presented in 1890 to the first commercial vineyard in the region.

Today, about 75 percent of Colorado's wineries are located in the Grand Valley AVA. The vineyards of Grand Valley are located at altitudes of up to 1400 meters above sea level. In Mesa County there are warm, sometimes hot summers and cold, snowy winters. In particular, the temperature differences between day and night are partly high and extend the growing cycle of the vines. So it can be quite cold in the summer, despite the high daily temperatures at night. The danger of frost is however mitigated by a good cold air drainage.
