Greater Sunda Islands
The Great Sunda Islands are a group of islands in the Malay Archipelago. Together with the small Sunda Islands they form the Sunda Islands.
Concept and definition
In a narrower sense are only the four largest islands this:
- Sumatra
- Java
- Borneo ( Indonesian Kalimantan )
- Sulawesi
With 1.5 million square kilometers and about 180 million people, it is the largest archipelago in the world (only Greenland is larger in area ).
In addition to the north of Borneo constitute the main part of the islands of Indonesia. In Borneo there are East Malaysia and Brunei.
In a broader sense also the upstream and intermediate smaller islands are added in, total, these are several hundred.
The southern of the islands forming the boundary between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. The Java Sea as part of the Australasian Mediterranean Sea Close to the Pacific, as well as the South China Sea in the north.

To the main islands of the great Sunda islands around there are many small islands and island groups. These include:
In Sumatra:
- Bengkalis, Rupat and Padang off the northeastern coast
- Riau Islands to the east
- Lingga Islands south of the Riau Islands
- Anambas islands further to the northeast, in the South China Sea
- Nias, Simeulue and Siberut off the southwest coast
In Borneo:
- Natuna Islands in the North West, the South China Sea
In Java:
- Madura
- Karimunjawa Islands
In Sulawesi:
- Togean Islands
- Banggai Islands
- Sangihe Islands
