Großer Krottenkopf

The Great Krottenkopf in Tirol ( Austria ) is with 2656 meters above sea level. A. the highest mountain in the Allgäu Alps. He belongs to a side branch of Hornbach chain that extends from the Allgäu main ridge about 15 km to the east.
Bases and routes to climb
- From Oberstdorf ( 815 m above sea level. NN ) you can reach via the Spielmannsau the Kempten hut at 1,844 m above sea level. NN on the European long-distance path E 5 in four hours.
- The Kempten hut is the northern base for an ascent of Krottenkopfes via the normal route ( easiest ascent ). The trail leads from the hut, first south, then east to the Upper Mädelejoch ( 2033 m above sea level. A. ) on the border between Germany and Austria, then to Krottenkopfscharte (2350 m above sea level. A. ) over rubble from the west and the following numerous red dots, easy climbing under the Hard UIAA I on scree-covered plates to the summit in just under three hours, however, slip resistance and in the summit area of vertigo are required.
- Also from Holzgau (1103 m above sea level. A. ) in the upper Lech Valley is a path leading to the Great Krottenkopf. The way E 5 by the Höhenbachtal the north leads to the Simms Waterfall ( with snack bar ) over on to the Lower Roßgumpenalpe. Just below the lower Mädelejochs, the route turns to Krottenkopfscharte. For this tour, the walking time is about four hours.
- Alternatively, the ascent by the Bernhardseck hut (1802 m above sea level. A. ), past the corsa and the jet head ( 2388 m above sea level. A. ), or of Elbigenalp in the Lech Valley via the Bernhardstal.
- A climb the north ridge offers. There are going to cope with two short and one long, vertical passage in the level of difficulty UIAA III. The starting point is the Hermannskarscharte which is trackless reaches of the Kempten hut by the Öfner Kar.
