Gubin, Poland

Gubin ( German: Guben ) is a town and seat of the rural community in the Polish part of Lower Lusatia. It lies on the bank of the Lusatian Neisse against the German town of Guben, from which it was separated in 1945 by the new border between Poland and Germany. Administratively it belongs to Lubusz Voivodeship. Gubin has 16,900 inhabitants. In the city there are three border crossings to Germany - a road crossing to Guben, the railway crossing the railway line Guben- Zbąszynek and a pedestrian bridge over the theater island.

History

Guben / Gubin was first mentioned in 1211 and received a city charter in 1235 according to Magdeburg law.

Until 1945, all Guben belonged to Germany. Due to the relocation of the German -Polish border to the Neisse in accordance with the Potsdam Agreement, the badly damaged in the Second World War, Old Town and the rest of the city east of the Neisse 1945 renamed Gubin and expulsion of the German population were Polish.

Buildings, parks and memorials

  • The historic town hall with buildings from the 14th century, several times rebuilt and extended in the 16th and 17th century, destroyed in World War II, it was rebuilt to the original.
  • Ruins of the build in the 14th century and during World War II ruined late gothic town church. In 2005, a German - Polish patrons has formed to rebuild the church.
  • The Mickiewicz Park is a 0.6 -acre public park, which is named after the Polish national poet and the most important representatives of the Polish Romanticism Adam Bernard Mickiewicz. He is in honor of a memorial stone in the park. Since 1908 is also a fountain with a lost figure, which showed a " carp boys ".
  • The theater island covers approximately 370 meters in the Lusatian Neisse river and is named after a once -built theater there in 1874. Today, a newly constructed entrance porch with original columns residues reminiscent of the structure. In the middle of up to 37 meters wide, the island is a sculpture by Julian Zaplatynski entitled " Pot of Gold ". It shows a carved from a tree trunk fish, which was the imagination as part of a sculptor workshops island. The artist wants to remind his work on the gold treasure of Vettersfelde.
  • Werder tower as the remainder of the fortification from the 14th century. The tower is 28.5 meters high with a circumference of 24.8 meters and an inner diameter of approximately 3.7 meters. The first dial from 1659 is exhibited in the Museum Gubin chamber.
  • Memorial stone for Corona Schröter: The artist and muse Goethe was born in the monastery road 12 (now a place in the immediate extension of the border crossing ).
  • Memorial stone for the synagogue from 1878, Ulica Dabrowskiego. The building was destroyed during the November pogroms on 9 November 1938.

Rural community / Gmina Gubin

The Gmina Gubin is an independent rural community in the powiat Krośnieński ( Crossen / Oder) Lubusz Voivodeship of and surrounds the city of Gubin in the north, east and south. Between 1975 and 1998 the church was part of the Zielona Góra Voivodeship (Green Mountain / Silesia).

Administrative seat of the Gmina Gubin is the city of Gubin, but not one whose area the land community.

On June 30, 2013 were living in the rural community Gubin 7367 inhabitants. The municipal area is 379.73 km ², of which 32 % of agricultural land and 57 % forest. The municipality accounts for 27.32 % of the area of the district ( powiat ).

The territory of the municipality Gubin country is crossed by numerous small rivers, the largest of which Lubsza ( Lubst ) from southeast flows coming in the center of the city Gubin in the Nysa Łużycka ( Lusatian Neisse ).
