Guiche, Pyrénées-Atlantiques
Guiche ( Guíshen Gascon, Basque Gixune ) is a commune with 920 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Pyrénées- Atlantiques in the Aquitaine region. It belongs to the district of Bayonne and the canton Bidache. The inhabitants are called (depending on language ) Guishot (or Gixundar ).
Guiche is part of the Basque province of Labourd. Districts are: Arancette, la Bourgade, Chuhenne, Garat, Grand- Borde, Marchand and Saint -Martin. Neighboring municipalities are: Sainte -Marie- de-Gosse and Saint- Laurent- de-Gosse in the north, Bidache in the east, Sames in the northeast, Bardos and Urt in the south.
History
The place name Guiche occurs in the past: Villa Guissen (12th century), Sanctus Joannes de Guiche ( 1687 ).
The county Guiche was owned by the Dukes of Gramont.
